History of the Studdah Herd
The Studdah herd was restocked in 2002 following Foot and Mouth, with 50 cows purchased from the Tarnbrook Herd. The cows have been easy to manage and have gone from strength to strength forming a nucleus around which our new herd has been built.
Many of the original cows lasted very well, maturing into great brood cows and we were delighted in the way they bred, leaving some outstanding daughters, grand daughters and the start of some great families.
In 2003 the farm was relocated within Bellerby, with farm buildings designed and built purposely for the future of the Studdah herd.
The Dream family has been the most prominent cow family for us with 28 of the 50 cows we purchased from the Tarnbrook herd being Dreams. We have now registered (March 2018) 240 Dreams here at Studdah, with one of the best lines coming through, Tarnbrook Dream 144 (EX91-4E), now awarded 5 stars. Of the 50 cows purchased from the Tarnbrook herd, 31 were classified Excellent (4 of the Dreams scoring EX94), 16 Very Good and 3 Good Plus.
We have been extremely successful with these cows in the show ring and herd competitions and they have also performed well in the parlour with our average now standing at 9,511kg as we conciously strive to improve profitability and performance. Our milk is sold to Wensleydale Creamery so we like high components and have worked to reduce the herds calving interval which is now 376 days.
